Job Purpose To render a professional security service in full compliance with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) Act 56 of 2001 (as amended), protecting Dis-Chem assets, property, staff, and customers by creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment. This includes identifying criminal activities, investigating disturbances, preventing theft, damage, and injury, while adhering to industry legislation, company SOPs, and best security practices.
Minimum Requirements – Essential
- Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate
- Valid Grade C accreditation with PSIRA (must be current and active)
- General minimum exposure of at least 3 years in the retail industry (e.g. shopping malls, warehouses, pharmacies, or similar high-traffic retail environments)
Advantageous / Preferred
- At least 1 year specific experience in a similar security guard role (retail/pharmacy preferred)
Key Responsibilities & Duties
General Security & Prevention
- Remain vigilant and alert at all times to identify suspicious behaviour or criminal activity
- Conduct regular and random patrols of the premises to ensure high visibility and deter crime
- Be clearly visible as a deterrent to prevent theft, damage, injury, or any unlawful acts
- Monitor and control access (vehicles & pedestrians) – only allow authorised entry
- Perform continuous personnel frisking and thorough vehicle searches throughout the day
- Report any unusual or suspicious behaviour by staff, customers, suppliers, or merchandisers
Access Control & Procedures
- Search staff, suppliers, and merchandisers entering/exiting the store
- Maintain and complete all registers, occurrence books, and documentation accurately
- Cancel staff purchases and goods declared correctly
- Supervise and check refuse removal according to Dis-Chem standards
- Follow strict opening and closing procedures (be observant at opening & ensure premises secured at close)
Incident Management & Reporting
- Investigate and report any signs of damage, unlawful entry, or suspicious incidents immediately
- Provide detailed verbal and written reports to management as soon as possible
- Contact police and emergency services when required and make official reports
- Respond quickly and correctly in crisis situations (armed robbery, fire, medical emergency, etc.)
- Assist emergency teams (first responders, clinic sisters, managers) during incidents
- Maintain order during evacuations and at assembly points
- Monitor alarm systems, CCTV, and operate detection/emergency equipment when necessary
Customer Service & Professionalism
- Be professional, courteous, friendly, approachable, and willing to assist customers, staff, and visitors
- Practice excellent customer service relations with all internal and external stakeholders
- Offer ongoing security advice, safety warnings, and tips to staff and customers
Other Duties
- Protect company property and assets from dishonest persons or malicious acts
- Remain at assigned post at all times when on duty
- Take accurate notes of daily activities and unusual occurrences
- Enforce rules and regulations to prevent criminal activity
- Perform special duties (e.g., respond to messages, run departmental errands) as required
Essential Competencies
- Thorough knowledge of PSIRA regulations and requirements
- Fire emergency and relevant Health & Safety training/exposure
- Excellent command of English (read, write, and speak fluently – company’s official language)
Advantageous Competencies
- Additional language (3rd language)
Special Conditions of Employment
- Must be PSIRA registered with current Grade C accreditation
- South African citizen
- Clear criminal record and clear credit record (MIE screening)
- Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport (plus PDP when deployed as driver)
