Position Purpose To supervise and ensure the efficient, reliable, and safe performance of the work team (traction linesmen, trade hands, infra-assistants, infra workers, trainees, contractors) during maintenance, construction, rehabilitation, and repairs on Overhead Track Equipment (OHTE), transmission lines, and related infrastructure to enable uninterrupted electric train operations.

Key Position Outputs / Responsibilities

  1. Construction & Maintenance of High Voltage OHTE
    • Construct and maintain OHTE to required standards
    • Assist with yard lights and cable repairs
    • Cast foundations and erect mast poles
    • Roll, sag, and tension wires
    • Install/repair bonding (negative returns circuit, blue pipeline bonds)
    • Isolate and earth OHTE
    • Perform flag protection duties
    • Communicate with train operating and electrical control personnel
    • Conduct basic welding (exothermic and arc)
    • Work to “clearance from” and on live OHTE
    • Align OHTE (staggering, balancing striking point, section insulators)
    • Fault-find on OHTE transmission lines and return circuit
    • Perform cable joining/splicing
  2. Supervision & Team Management
    • Supervise traction linesmen, trade hands, infra-assistants, and unauthorised personnel
    • Ensure correct PPE usage by all workers
    • Conduct quality inspections and sign off job cards
    • Ensure timely submission of subordinates’ work orders
    • Maintain on-track maintenance vehicles in serviceable condition
    • Conduct preliminary investigations for grievances/disciplinary matters
    • Motivate staff to improve productivity and efficiency
    • Provide clear instructions and control measures
    • Explain dangers and safe working procedures
    • Maintain on-site presence to enforce adherence
    • Ensure correct materials, tools, and manpower are used
    • Render first aid and hazmat response when necessary
    • Instil discipline in the team
  3. Emergency Breakdown Response
    • Organise team for timeous attendance
    • Conduct fault analysis and finding

  4. Work Permit Issuing
    • Read/analyse reticulation diagrams
    • Communicate with electrical control and CTC

    • Open/close track and link switches
    • Apply live line tester and portable earth connection
    • Explain limits and dangers to staff
    • Ensure work permit is understood and signed
    • Clear equipment/personnel when cancelling permit
  5. On-Track Machine & Crane Operation
    • Operate and pilot on-track machines and cranes safely
  6. Safety, Supervision & Compliance
    • Conduct risk assessments and green area/toolbox talks
    • Explain dangers, risks, and safe procedures
    • Ensure team safety (subordinates and visitors)
    • Adhere to Act 85 of 1993 (OHS)
    • Coordinate monthly inspections (RMD sheets), lifting equipment, tool checks
    • Safekeep/control/issue/use detonators
    • Scrutinise/sign Work Permit books (3-monthly) and archive for 36 months
    • Manage emergency switching, area safeguarding, planning, and transport in contingencies
    • Ensure safe live working methods
    • Verify flagmen distances
    • Make safety-related decisions on site
    • Conduct task observations and address gaps
  7. On-the-Job Training & Coaching
    • Mentor and coach team, trainees, unauthorised personnel
    • Explain correct procedures and demonstrate physically
    • Identify knowledge gaps, complete IDPs, and arrange training/refresher courses
  8. Reporting
    • Complete/submit job cards, 24-hour reports, log sheets
    • Compile incident investigation reports
    • Submit timecards
  9. Transport & Logistics
    • Arrange transport for staff/material from base to site
    • Conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections
    • Promote road regulation adherence
    • Ensure safe on/off-loading procedures

Qualifications & Experience

Work from home
  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science
  • 3 years’ experience as Traction Linesman
  • Valid Code C1 (10) driver’s licence with PDP
  • OR
    • Trained and obtained from FoR:
      • Category A red / A brown certificate
      • Train working rules
      • Code 29

      • Road knowledge
      • Working at heights certificate
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in OHTE/rail infrastructure
  • Valid Code C1 (10) driver’s licence with PDP
