The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is inviting applications for a Principal Porter position at Groote Schuur Hospital, located in Observatory, Cape Town.

This role is suited for experienced hospital porters with leadership ability, responsible for coordinating porter services, managing staff, and ensuring safe patient movement within the hospital.

Position: Principal Porter

Salary: R163 680 per annum

Minimum Requirements

• General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) / Grade 9

Experience:

• Relevant porter experience in a hospital environment

  Education

• Experience in handling and checking oxygen cylinders

Inherent Requirements

• Ability to work:

  • Shifts, night duty, weekends, and public holidays

• Must be physically fit and able to:

  • Lift patients

  • Move patients between beds, trolleys, and wheelchairs

  • Handle oxygen cylinders

• Willingness to perform relief duties in other porter sections

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards

• Knowledge of health and safety regulations

• Understanding of disciplinary procedures and labour processes

• Basic contract management knowledge

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate porter operations

• Manage:

  • Patient transportation

  • Oxygen cylinder handling

  • Blood specimen delivery

  • Removal of bodies

  • Patient file management

• Monitor agency staff performance and SLA compliance

• Ensure safe movement of patients and equipment

• Maintain trolleys and wheelchairs

• Identify training needs for porter staff

• Support Chief Porter with HR functions, including:

  • Performance management (SPMS)

  • Labour relations

  • Recruitment and selection
